In San Luis, education and food are two things that are not provided to all children. Many kids go days without knowing where their food is coming from, and many have to beg or steal. In addition, even though there is free schooling, the lack of supervision, money for a uniform and school supplies, and lack of transportation leaves many children without means for education.
Caring Hearts responded to this need with our Soup Kitchen, open 6 days a week. Every morning, children come pick up a bagged lunch, but many of them finish it before even getting out of the gates! During the week, they can come back after school for tutoring. Every Saturday, we have classes and games for the children to come to as well. In the summer, we provide camps during the day so they have a safe place to be. At times, we have had 200 children show up.
Many children in San Luis walk to the Soup Kitchen at the young age of 4 or less, without shoes, knowing that they can come to us and find a safe place where they will be loved and cared for.
